Egypt achieved a historic feat on Sunday night when they registered their first ever World Cup win, defeating New Zealand 3-1 in a Group G match at BC Place, Vancouver.Superstar Mohamed Salah once again gave an outstanding performance in the major tournament, scoring the decisive goal as Egypt turned their enthusiastic performance into a historic result.
The victory pushed the Pharaohs to the top of the group standings, although qualification for the knockout stage is still not guaranteed.Egypt will now face Iran in a final decisive group match in Seattle, needing at least a draw to advance further in the tournament.
Salah delivers when it matters most
The match was Salah’s in the decisive moments. However, the All Whites were unable to maintain their advantage as Egypt gradually took control.Mustafa Zico equalized in the 58th minute with a perfect header that the goalkeeper managed to clear, but was unable to clear. Zico then became the creator of Salah’s winning goal, capping off a decisive second-half lead.Trezeguet achieved victory in the 82nd minute with a powerful header, ensuring that Egypt was not deprived of its historic moment.
The Group G race is wide open
With this victory, Egypt moved to a strong position in Group G, but it remains under pressure before the final match in the group against Iran. Meanwhile, New Zealand are winless in the tournament and will face Belgium in their next match in Vancouver.Elsewhere in the group, Belgium and Iran were held to a goalless draw, leaving the qualification race in good stead heading into the final round of matches.
