The Orange national team returns from its draw with Japan with a huge victory in the 2026 World Cup and dominates Group FThe Netherlands produced one of their most complete performances at the 2026 World Cup to date, beating Sweden 5-1 at Houston to secure their first win of the tournament and officially book their place in the Round of 32.After drawing with Japan 2-2 in their opening Group F match, Ronald Koeman’s side responded forcefully with a ruthless display of attacking efficiency. Brian Brobbey and Cody Jacobo each scored two goals before substitute Crescencio Summerville added a fifth goal late, putting the Netherlands at the top of the group with four points and goal difference. For Sweden, who arrived in Houston full of confidence after thrashing Tunisia 5-1 in their opening match, it was a worrying evening.

Graham Potter’s side created chances throughout the match and finished with more shots than the Netherlands, but a combination of wasteful finishing and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen ultimately proved costly.

Proby and Jackpo put the Dutch in complete control

The Netherlands could not have hoped for a better start. Just five minutes into the game, Cody Jacobo broke down the left flank and exposed space behind the Swedish defense before sending a low cross in front of goal.

Brian Proby anticipated the pass perfectly, getting to the far post to convert from close range and give the Orange an early advantage.

Sweden tried to respond through Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, but the Dutch remained dangerous whenever they moved forward. Their second goal came in the 17th minute and again came from Broby. Denzel Dumfries burst from the right flank and fired a dangerous diagonal pass into the penalty area.

A slight deflection missed the Swedish defense and Proby reacted quicker, sending the loose ball beyond Christopher Nordfeldt to complete his brace.

Despite trailing by two goals, Sweden enjoyed long periods of possession and territory during the remainder of the first half. Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Emil Forsberg all found promising positions, but Verbruggen repeatedly denied them with a series of crucial saves that maintained the Netherlands’ advantage heading into the break.

Sweden resists, but Verbruggen stands firm

To their credit, Sweden refused to surrender. In the 59th minute they finally found a breakthrough after gaining possession in midfield and starting a quick transition. Isak surged forward before sending a perfect through ball into the path of Anthony Elanga, who coolly slotted past Verbruggen to reduce the deficit to 4-1.

The goal sparked Sweden’s best period of the match. Potter’s side pushed forward aggressively, sending a large number of players into attack and forcing the Netherlands deep into their own half.

Isak became the focal point of almost every Swedish move, while Kulusevski repeatedly drifted inside from wide areas in search of openings.Sweden eventually finished the match with 20 shots to the Netherlands’ 12 and registered nine shots on goal. However, Verbruggen produced one of the best goalkeeping performances of the tournament so far, making seven saves, including a close-range stop from Gjokeris and multiple tackles to deny Isak.

As the pressure increased, Koeman responded by introducing additional defensive reinforcements and shifting the Dutch into a more compact shape. Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij comfortably dealt with Sweden’s increasingly desperate crosses and long-range attempts, which frustrated the Scandinavian side as time wore on.

Summerville completes its complete victory as the picture of Group Six changes

Any lingering Swedish hopes faded in the closing stages. In the 89th minute, substitute Crescencio Summerville picked up the ball outside the box, switched to his strong foot and curled a stunning shot into the top corner to complete a memorable evening for the Orange.

The final statistics confirmed the extraordinary nature of the competition. Sweden had 48 percent of the ball, beat the Netherlands 20-12, and forced Verbruggen to stop seven shots, while Nordfeldt needed only one shot. However, the Netherlands converted five of their seven shots on target, displaying a level of decisive finishing that Sweden was unable to match. The result significantly reshaped the sixth group. The Netherlands moved to the top of the standings with four points and a goal difference of +4 after scoring seven goals in the first two matches.

Sweden maintained second place with three points, despite erasing the large goal difference it achieved against Tunisia. For Koeman and the Netherlands, qualification to the last 32 is now assured and attention can begin to shift towards finishing top of the group. Sweden’s fate remains in their own hands, but Potter’s side will need to respond against Japan in the final round after suffering their first setback of the tournament.
