New Delhi: The ‘black magic’ controversy has created a storm on social media, as it came into the limelight during the IPL 2026 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings. A viral video showing a Sunrisers Hyderabad fan performing a lemon ritual – often described as black magic – coincided with the sacking of CSK star Shivam Dube, sparking widespread chatter online.
Along with the video, an unverified message claiming that CSK complained to the IPL about the incident was also circulated on social media.Reacting to the letter and the controversial controversy, former Indian Premier League (ISL) commissioner Lalit Modi claimed that such practices had happened in the past, alleging that the owner of an ISL team had once resorted to similar tactics.

“I remember I posted some team owner doing this to the opposing team. By doing exactly that to himself in the opposing team’s locker room.
I even alerted opposing team owners this way in the 2011 season – when it happened and I got an alert with concrete proof. “I will reveal all these types of activities done by those in the film/TV series as my team has decided to reveal,” Modi said.In another post, Modi dismissed CSK’s widely-circulated complaint letter, questioning its veracity.“It looks fake this time. But one of the team owners indulged in this kind of practice,” Modi wrote.
He added in another post in response to the video, “Black magic or coincidence? Or fake news?”
