New Delhi: The ongoing IPL 2026 season has come under intense scrutiny over an alarming drop in standards of play, with former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif leading the criticism after highlighting frequent errors and poor catching among the teams. The numbers confirm the concern. Across 59 matches tracked by CricViz, players knocked down 153 catches while completing 541, resulting in a catch efficiency of just 77.9% — a steep decline in a tournament often decided by razor-thin margins.Kaif, known for his exceptional standards during his playing days, did not hold back in his assessment of the recent performance. “It is painful to watch the play in this Indian Premier League. Today Yash Raj dropped KL when they were at zero level.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also made a mistake. The little boy hasn’t hunted this season. While playing for India, he has to be more accurate on the field. It is the duty of coaches to teach young people field skills. For their part, the boys should enjoy the playgrounds and be proud of them.

“Very Bad” Execution: Parag’s reaction after RR’s defeatKaif’s comments came on the day Rajasthan Royals stumbled again on the field during their five-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

RR skipper Riyan Parag admitted that lapses in play, coupled with bowling inconsistencies, cost his team dearly in a crucial match. “Too bad. It has to be better than what we did today. I’m very disappointed,” he said.Parag stressed that RR failed to take advantage of a strong platform and allowed the game to escape execution and energy. “We were in a pretty good space after 14 overs… it should have been 220-230,” he pointed out their batting failures, adding that their bowling and fielding standards were also “not up to par”.The RR captain did not shy away from the responsibility either, pointing out that repeated poor performances in recent matches have left the franchise in a must-win situation in their remaining matches to stay alive in the playoff race.Wider on-field issue across IPL 2026RR’s defeat only added to the wider concerns raised by Kaif, with dropped catches and misplaced pitches becoming a recurring theme across teams this season. What was once considered cricket’s defining strength – strong athleticism – now appears under pressure, with execution errors increasingly affecting match outcomes. As the playoff race heats up, the on-field conversation has shifted from isolated mistakes to a systemic concern.
