NEW DELHI: The UEFA Champions League final between defending champions Paris Saint-Germain and newly crowned Premier League winners Arsenal has been described as having a ‘better attack’ (PSG) versus PSG.
“Best defence” (Arsenal). On the biggest night in the history of European football, the world will witness two contrasting philosophies built by two Spanish coaching legends. Luis Enrique’s attacking machine will collide with the defensive fortress that Mikel Arteta has spent years building at Arsenal. If any rivalry proves that there are multiple ways to reach the top of the “beautiful game,” it is this one.
Paris Saint-Germain are looking to become only the second team after Real Madrid to win back-to-back Champions League titles, while Arsenal want to make history by winning their first Champions League title after ending a 22-year Premier League title drought. On their way to the Puskas Arena, PSG have already scored 44 goals in 16 games – one short of Barcelona’s record of 45 goals in a single edition, set in 1999-2000. Conversely, the London side, the only unbeaten team in the tournament, have conceded just six goals and kept a clean sheet in nine matches, a testament to their top-class defensive abilities.Attack meets defense on the biggest stage in footballFormer Indian footballer and pundit Robin Singh believes Arteta will resist any temptation to press high against Luis Enrique’s free-flowing side.
““It would be suicidal for Arsenal to come out and try to put pressure on a PSG team that is relying on the pace of Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and Desiree Douy,” Singh said in an exclusive interaction with Timesofindia.com facilitated by Sony Sports.“I expect Arteta to use Rice and Zobimendi as defensive midfielders in front of their back line and try to prevent the midfield from moving. As much as we talk about PSG’s strikers playing football.”Battle for controlVitinha is the fulcrum of the PSG side that keeps them going in attack and midfield. The Portuguese has made 227 assists from the halfway line in the Champions League this season – 44 more than any other player. Arsenal’s Declan Rice will have to restrict creativity so that Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield has less of an impact.

“They are also controlled by Joao Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz or whoever plays in midfield. So for Arsenal to contain them, they will have to have two defensive midfielders.”
Singh’s opinion. This is not the same Arsenal that PSG dismantled across two semi-finals last season. Arteta’s men have grown.“He has built a very strong defensive team.” Singh said as he reflected on the differences he saw from last season.“Playing against them is much more difficult. They are happy to play less pretty football to ensure they are a cohesive unit. Defensive solidity, clean sheets, new trophies – that’s what Arteta went and did for this Arsenal team.Kvaratskhelia problem at ArsenalAchraf Hakimi, arguably the best right-back in the world currently, is a doubt for the game and could be a big loss for Luis Enrique’s side. His overlapping threat from right-back could have been devastating against Arsenal’s exposed left flank.
Which team do you think is the best in the Champions League final?
Mikel Arteta is also facing problems at right-back as Ben White and Jurian Timber both recover from injuries. But to contain Paris Saint-Germain’s most dangerous striker, Georgian “George Best” Khavicha Kvaratskhelia, Timber may have to go back in a race against time.

The Georgian numbers are simply amazing. His seven goals and three assists make him the biggest contributor in the knockout stages of the season, and when he assisted Dembélé in the semi-final against Bayern Munich, he became the first player in Champions League history to score or assist in seven consecutive knockout stage matches during the same season.“I think it might be an idea for Timber to play, but he has to prove himself in training for Arteta to pick him,” Singh said, adding: “It is one of the biggest nights in Champions League football for Arsenal to win the two biggest trophies in Europe, some might say, which are the Premier League and now the Champions League.”
So I think this is the way Arteta and Timber can show him why he wants to start.”Singh added how Timber’s presence can make a difference in the game. Kvaratskhelia’s ball-carrying abilities would give any defender a run for the rest of his life, and his 141 progressive carries in the Champions League this season have seen him travel 1,557 metres.Five of his goals in the 2025-26 competition came directly after those goals.
Arsenal desperately needs the Dutchman to play because he is their best – and perhaps only – hope of containing Kvaratskhelia.

“Pressure is a privilege. Heavy is the head that always wears the crown,” The former Indian striker said.“PSG have experience on big European nights. But sometimes, freshness also brings a little unpredictability, and that’s what Luis Enrique relies on.”Difference makers are waiting in reserveSingh said talking about the strength of the bench “If you need defensive solidity, Arsenal are much more prepared from the bench.
When you look at the strikers, I still feel that PSG can bring in players who can change the game.”Singh has pointed to Kai Havertz and Bradley Barkula as likely to turn the game around from either dugout. Havertz, who scored the winning goal for Chelsea in the 2021 final against Manchester City, may be decisive in the later stages of the match.

Paris Saint-Germain carries the weight of champions. Who refuse to stop and hope to keep the crown. Arsenal arrive with history in their hearts every day as they find themselves in the Champions League final for the first time since 2006.If Arsenal get over the line, they will also become the 25th club ever to win the European Cup or Champions League, having played 225 games in the competition – more than any other club who have never lifted the trophy. On Saturday night in Budapest, only one side will have the last laugh.Watch UEFA Champions League 2025/26 – Final – PSG vs Arsenal on 30 May 2026, from 9:30 PM IST live on Sony Sports Ten 2 SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 3 Indian SD & HD, Sony Sports Ten 4 SD & HD (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada) and Sony LIV.
