Sunil Narine etched his name deeper into the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he became only the third player to reach 200 wickets in the tournament. In the process, he also became the first foreign player to achieve the feat, underscoring his longevity and dominance in the league.
Most wickets in IPL (economy rate)
- 228 – Yuzvendra Chahal (8.02)
- 215 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar (7.68)
- 201 – Sunil
Narin (6.79) - 192 – Piyush Chawla (7.96)
- 187 – Ravichandran Ashwin (7.20)
- 186 – Jasprit Bumrah (7.32)
- 183 – Dwayne Bravo (8.38)
The feat came during Kolkata Knight Riders’ match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where Narine scored twice in a crucial period to derail the opposition. Earlier, Travis Head played a blistering knock of 61 off just 28 balls, giving SRH a flying start. Along with Ishan Kishan (42 off 29), he pushed the hosts to 105/1 in the ninth over after strong control. However, KKR’s spin duo turned the game on its head. Varun Chakravarthy, despite getting off to an expensive start, broke the momentum by dismissing Head, leading to the collapse.
A sharp catch by Rovman Powell removed Heinrich Klaasen cheaply, and the wicket began to tumble quickly. Narine then delivered the decisive blow, taking two wickets in one over to complete his 200-wicket milestone. His spell, combined with Chakravarthy’s 3/36, meant the pair finished with 5/67 between them. From a commanding position, SRH completely lost their way, folding for 165 in 19 overs. It was a decisive comeback from KKR, who will be the happier side after their dominating display with the ball.
