IPL 2026: “Once I settled in, I knew...” - Tilak Varma reveals turning point behind maiden ton

Tilak Varma’s first century in the IPL was not just about numbers. It was about clarity, patience and then pure execution under pressure. Named man of the match after taking an unbeaten 101 off 45 balls, the Mumbai Indians batsman reflected what the innings means, both personally and for the team. “Yes, of course, the first hundred will always be special. To be honest, it was very important for us. We don’t have much time from here. Every match is important for us,” Tilak said. Coming into the game on a roll, he admitted his main focus was simply making time at the crease. “In the last five matches, I haven’t spent a lot of time in the middle. So I was just thinking in this match, I want to spend some time in the middle of the wicket.”

If I saw the first 20 balls, I was taking it ball by ball. “I was just hitting.” That cautious start saw him crawl 17 off 20 deliveries before a dramatic shift in tempo took place. What followed was a stunning onslaught as he smashed 82 runs off his last 23 balls. “And later, once I faced some balls on the wicket, I know what I’m capable of, and I did just that. I’m really grateful for that,” he added. Tilak stressed that his style was dictated by the match situation and not by deliberate strikes.

“I was just seeing the situation, what the team needed. At that moment, I was settled, keeping my head down and following my fundamentals. I’ve got all the great shots. When the team needs me, I can use that. But especially when you hit under pressure, all you need is to support your skill. That’s what I supported today, and it gave me good results.” He also credited his partner Noman Dhir for stabilizing the innings during a difficult phase after the early wicket. “Yes, it was very important. The way Naman played in that moment was very decisive for us, with positive intentions. Credit also goes to him. And then, the way I continued to play, I’m really proud.” The contest itself started with Kagiso Rabada striking early, removing three runs in the Powerplay to leave MI in trouble. However, Tilak’s shifting innings took them to 199 for five, a total that proved more than adequate. The bowlers then registered a comprehensive 99-run win over Gujarat Titans, with Jasprit Bumrah providing early breakthroughs and Ashwani Kumar leading the charge through the middle with a four-wicket haul. Beyond the match-winning impact, this century was a defining moment in Tilak Varma’s ISL journey, a knock built on patience, belief and a gutsy finish.
