TimesofIndia.com in Ahmedabad: Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan don’t just score goals; They are redefining batting partnerships in T20 cricket. With another season of over 700 runs each, the Gujarat Titans’ opening pair have entered the elite zone.

They have matched and surpassed the records once dominated by legends like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Their consistency and remarkable understanding at the top have made them one of the most prolific batting duos the format has ever seen. The Gujarat Titans duo now have partnerships dating back eight centuries for the opening wicket, the most in men’s T20 cricket alongside Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Their tally of 2,944 runs combined in the Indian Premier League is already the second-highest partnership total in the tournament’s history, behind only the 3,123 runs amassed by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers between 2011 and 2020.

Remarkably, Gill and Sudharsen have achieved this since only IPL 2022, when Sudharsen was still finding his feet in his first GT season. Their individual numbers were equally impressive. After Sudharsan claimed the Orange Cap title with 759 points last year and Gill finished fourth with 650 points, the duo once again dominated the charts in 2026, with Gill scoring 722 points and Sudharsan 710, bettered only by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Gill also has a slight advantage in scoring average this season, scoring 163.71 compared to Sudharsen’s 159.55, while he has been particularly aggressive on the power play, scoring 159.20 to his partner’s 145.02.At times, there has also been criticism of GT for their over-reliance on this duo. However, their appetite for running was never in doubt.Shubman and Sai are a more traditional opener. They prefer to pick gaps rather than take off.

Their strength lies in playing proper cricket, which was evident during their 167-run match against Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2.Gill admitted at the pre-final press conference in Mullanpur after GT’s win over RR how he and Sai over the years have built a relationship on and off the field.“We spend a lot of time in the Indian Premier League together, on the field, off the field as well, and then we are in the Test team as well, so, we have a lot of conversations,” He told reporters.

“There are things we talk about about cricket outside of cricket. Not only for them, but I think there are many players in our team who also play for the country, and I hope we can play together for a long period of time. It’s very important for us to know each other well, and to have a great equation, which automatically carries over to on-field performance, I think,” He added. Gilles was particularly effusive in his praise of his opening GT partner, speaking at length about the southpaw’s strength. “When I first started playing the Indian Premier League, one of the challenges I faced was to keep playing matches at the same pace. I think this is one of Sai’s biggest strengths;” He said. “You play a lot of matches, and there may be days where you mentally don’t feel you’re up to the mark, or physically you don’t feel you’re up to the mark, but to be able to have the same intensity in all the matches and be consistent in your preparation, in your routine, is not that easy, and he’s someone who is very consistent in his routine, in his life outside of cricket.

This is what makes him stable on the field as well.” Jill added.

GT Director of Cricket, Vikram Solanki, also praised the appetite that the duo has. “It’s on the back of a lot of hard work. I can only imagine all the work Schoopman has put in throughout his career to get where he is in terms of his hitting. He is an exceptional young man. And sometimes you have to realize that he is still young.

And for him to play cricket like that, and bat like that, is something special.“Sai no less. He may be younger in his journey, but you can see that he is taking a good example from Schopman and realizing that his skills are actually what you and I would consider the art of batting, a kind of traditional form of batting. But there is no doubt in my mind that if the situation requires them to raise the run rate and the wicket actually suits them playing that way, they can adapt.

And I think that’s their best quality, their ability to adapt, under any situation, under any wicket, under any opposition.

This is coupled with the fact that they have a huge appetite for scoring goals. Good habits you should have,” Solanki said at the press conference after GT’s win.Records have followed Gill and Sudharsin wherever they hit this season, but stats or milestones are unlikely to matter as much as what awaits us in the final. One last partnership this season and another statement at the top that could turn a great season into a championship winning one.
