India beat New Zealand 2-0 to win the FIH Women’s Nations Cup
New Delhi: India concluded their unbeaten campaign in style by beating hosts New Zealand 2-0 in the final to win the FIH Women’s Nations Cup title on Sunday. The win also secured India’s promotion to the FIH Women’s Pro League next season, marking their return to elite competition.
This is India’s second victory in the Africa Cup of Nations after winning the inaugural edition in 2022. Navneet Kaur opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a powerful shot from a corner kick, before Sunilita Topu doubled the lead in the 15th minute by clearing Dipika’s shot. Despite New Zealand having plenty of possession, India remained solid in defense and never allowed the hosts to get back into the contest.
A dominant campaign ends in glory
India looked strong throughout the tournament, defeating the United States, Japan and Uruguay in the group stage before crushing Chile 6-0 in the semi-finals. Deepika finished as top scorer with six goals, sharing the honor with America’s Ashley Sessa, while Larimsiamy was named Player of the Final.After taking a two-goal lead, India focused on maintaining its level and defending with discipline. Goalkeeper Savita made an important save from a penalty kick for New Zealand in the final quarter, while the defense frustrated the hosts with a compact structure and high intensity.To celebrate the milestone, Hockey India has announced a cash bonus of Rs 3 lakh per player and Rs 1.5 lakh per support team member.
