Julian Nagelsmann, Jurgen Klopp
Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as coach of the German national team following their shock exit from the FIFA World Cup, ending his tenure after less than three years in charge. The German Football Association confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, four days after Germany was eliminated from the tournament by Paraguay in the round of 32 after a 1-1 draw and penalty shootout. The result marked the end of Germany’s third successive World Cup campaign before the round of 16.His resignation came after discussions with the federation. Nagelsmann had previously indicated that he intended to stay despite two years remaining on his contract, which made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the World Cup.His future came under scrutiny during the tournament, with criticism over his tactics and team selection.Germany’s defeat to Paraguay was their first ever loss on penalties in a FIFA World Cup. The result prevented them from qualifying for the round of 16, where they would have faced France.Germany finished at the top of its group after defeating Curacao and Ivory Coast. However, they looked unconvincing in their defeat to Ecuador in the final match of the group stage.
Nagelsmann also faced questions over his decision to bring veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer back into the starting lineup and regularly use Joshua Kimmich at right-back instead of his preferred midfield role.Nagelsmann was appointed Germany coach in September 2023. Before the World Cup, he also led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship.According to reports, former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp is among the most prominent candidates to succeed him.
