'17th place haunts us': Shreyas Iyer fumed when Ravi Bishnoi gifted England win on debut for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

New Delhi: India captain Shreyas Iyer refused to blame Ravi Bishnoi despite the pacer’s expensive 17th over in England’s four-wicket win in the second T20I at Old Trafford on Saturday.Chasing 191, England rode an unbeaten 76 from Jacob Bethell to reach the target by a wide margin. The turning point came in the 17th over when Bishnoi leaked 29 runs, allowing England to take complete control of the chase.

That changed the game

India looked firmly in command after reducing England to 142/5 in 16 overs. But the match swung dramatically in the 17th minute.Bishnoi started off a no-ball, which Bethel sent in for a six from a free kick.

Then the spinner bowled another ball, and Bethel continued his onslaught with another six, four, and six more, along with singles and doubles, taking 29 pitches from the top.Although the hefty cost was steep, Eyre stood by his youngster after the match.“I think we all know where things went, but I don’t want to single out a specific player. I said, ‘OK, he’ll come back strong after that (first time off the ball).”

But the 17th haunted us. “But he will learn,” Iyer said.

“It was an amazing result.”

The India skipper believes his side registered the winning total on a challenging surface that offered uneven bounce. He added: “I think it was a great result on this pitch with variable bounces. The first 15 times we were in the lead of the game but suddenly – credit to the way Jacob played.”Iyer credited Jacob Bethell with turning the chase around with his aggressive batting.

He also felt that England had assessed the conditions well before launching their attack.“They analyzed the dimensions of the ground and wicket early on,” he said. The India captain particularly praised the young Englishman’s fearless mentality.“He has an unwavering, fearless attitude. The way he hits the nets… is something I have to learn from him. I didn’t expect him to be so nervous.”Despite the disappointing defeat, Iyer said the team will move quickly and focus on the third T20I.He concluded: “Of course, I am always in high spirits and I know that this is the lowest level you can reach.”The third round of the five-match T20I series will be played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on July 7.
