New Delhi:
India’s ambitious space mission ‘Gaganyaan’ has reportedly achieved another important milestone with the successful test of its dope parachute system. The news came to light when the qualification level load test was conducted at DRDO’s Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility, located at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh.
The test was conducted on February 18 (2026) with Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), ISRO, Air Connectivity Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), DRDO, along with various dedicated TBRL teams. RTRS dynamic testing, which simulates qualification level loads that are above maximum flight loads, demonstrates the additional design safety margin of the canopy. The test demonstrates India’s expertise in designing and manufacturing high-strength strip parachutes.
Why is Droog Umbrella important for India?
The Drogue Parachute plays an extremely crucial role in the safe landing and recovery of crew unity. It is deployed at high altitudes to stabilize and slow the spacecraft before releasing the main parachutes.
The success of the qualification test means that the parachute test was safe and can withstand extreme aerodynamic forces during the return to and descent of the space capsule, a vital condition for the safety of the astronauts.
Role of DRDO in India’s human spaceflight mission
The Defense Research and Development Organization is working closely with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to develop and test key safety systems for Gaganyaan.
The Rail Track Rocket Sledge facility is used to simulate high-speed conditions and validate critical aviation systems under controlled harsh environments.
Strengthening India’s Space Capabilities – DRDO
This successful parachute test highlights India’s growing expertise in advanced space technologies and mission-critical safety systems. As Gaganyaan approaches the phase of his manned mission, each successful qualification claims to bring the nation one step closer to sending Indian astronauts into space with proper safety.
Thanks to the ongoing collaboration between DRDO and ISRO, India’s first manned spaceflight mission is steadily progressing towards launch readiness.
