background;

Sunny Joseph hails from Kannur district in Kerala and is a lawyer by profession. He is one of the senior leaders of the Indian National Congress and has been active in state politics through party organization and electoral participation. Over the years, he has built his political base in Peravur through constant constituency-level involvement and party work. It is associated with the Congress-led United Democratic Front, one of the two dominant political alliances in the state. Within the party, he was involved in organizational roles at the district and state levels, especially in Kannur, a politically sensitive district for the Congress party.

About the seat:

Peravoor Assembly constituency, located in Kannur district, is a competitive and politically important seat in north Kerala. It forms part of the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency and includes semi-rural and mountainous areas, including Peravur and Ireti, and its economy is largely based on agriculture such as rubber, pepper, coconut and other agricultural crops. Domestic issues such as crop prices, infrastructure and connectivity often influence electoral outcomes.

What makes Peravur particularly important is its electoral pattern. Unlike much of Kannur, which has traditionally leaned towards the Communist Party of India (Maoist), this constituency has consistently witnessed direct and close contests between the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Communist Party of India (Maoist)-led Left Democratic Front. The seat has a history of alternating between the two alliances, making it a swing constituency.

It was won by AB Abdul Lakoti in 2011, followed by wins by Sunny Joseph in 2016 and 2021. Earlier too, the constituency saw representation from both political fronts, and was not dominated by any leader for a long time. The lack of long-term control highlights their competitive nature. Hence, Sunny Joseph’s successive victories in a seat where voter preferences have historically shifted between parties.

What happened in the previous elections?

In the 2016 Kerala Assembly elections, Sunny Joseph contested from Peravur as an Indian National Congress candidate and won the seat, defeating the CPI(M) candidate and entering the state legislature.

He was re-elected in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections from the same seat. In these elections, he defeated CPI(M) leader KK Shailaja, the former health minister of Kerala. The contest was closely watched due to the prominence of his opponent and the competitive nature of the constituency.

His successive victories in 2016 and 2021 demonstrate the continued electoral support in Peravur, a constituency known for close elections and shifting political trends.
