The gang rape of a woman on a moving bus in Delhi, which took place earlier this week, has revived horrific memories of the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case that shook the entire country.

On Monday night, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly raped in a moving bus by the driver and the conductor in northwest Delhi’s Rani Bagh area.
As more shocking details of the case emerged, it was also reported that the woman refused to be admitted to hospital despite being seriously injured as she said there was no one to cook for her children at home.

HT had earlier reported that the woman works in a factory in Mangolpuri and lives with her family in Pitampura, and was returning home after work when the accident occurred near the B-block bus stand in Saraswati Vihar area.
She traveled part of the way in an e-rickshaw before continuing on foot. Police said they found the bus parked nearby and the bus driver near it and asked him about the time. Then the man motioned for her to come closer and pulled her into the bus.
The two men took turns sexually assaulting her on the moving bus for about two hours while the bus was traveling several kilometers towards Nangloi. The accused then left it near Nangloi metro station.
“Who will cook at home?”
Police arrived at the scene after the woman called the cops. She was taken for medical examination at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered on the charge of gang rape and related sections in Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Due to the seriousness of her injuries, doctors at the hospital advised her to be admitted to the hospital. But she refused, saying that if she was accepted, who would cook for her children at home. The woman said that her husband suffers from tuberculosis and stays at home. She also has three daughters, ages 8, 6 and 4, according to Live Hindustan.
The accused were arrested and the bus was confiscated
A police officer said the bus had curtains covering the windows, making it difficult for outsiders to see inside.
The accused, namely driver Umesh and Commander Ramendra, were arrested and sent to judicial custody. Investigators have seized the sleeper bus registered in Bihar and are examining CCTV footage along its route.
