With elections in four states and one union territory coming to an end soon, the BJP may soon have to shift its focus to Delhi, where the party president’s term has ended. There is a buzz about who will replace Virendra Sachdeva as Delhi BJP chief, and names of potential contenders have also started emerging.

However, some also believe that Sachdeva could continue in office for another term, given how the BJP forms a government in Delhi in 2025 under his leadership.

Virendra Sachdeva completed three years as BJP’s Delhi unit president in March. He was nominated as working president of Delhi BJP in December 2022 and became full-time president months later in March 2023.

Will Virendra Sachdeva lose his key role in the BJP?

Talks have emerged about Sachdeva possibly being replaced from the post because the BJP constitution stipulates three years for a state president’s term, with only two consecutive terms allowed.

This means that Sachdeva can still hold the position for another term.

The BJP’s national leadership may decide who will be the party’s Delhi unit president after the assembly elections in West Bengal are over, news agency PTI reported.

Potential contenders if Sachdeva loses his position

Citing some party insiders, PTI reported that the names of NDMC vice president Kuljit Chahal and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra are among the top contenders to replace Sachdeva.

Chahal, who is also the national convener of NaMo and is said to be considered close to the BJP leadership, while Harsh Malhotra has been identified to be close to the RSS.

Besides them, leaders like Jai Prakash are also making the rounds, the report added.

While incumbent Virendra Sachdeva and minister Harsh Malhotra are from Punjab, NDMC in-charge Chahal is a ‘Jat’ and Jai Prakash belongs to the Gujjar community.

Virendra Sachdeva is credited with guiding the BJP to a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections in which the party won 48 of the 70 seats and formed the government in Delhi after 27 years.
