The first BJP government in West Bengal has only one woman in the Cabinet currently, and that woman is 51-year-old BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, a former fashion designer-turned-politician who was sworn in as a minister alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday.

Agnimitra Paul took oath along with senior BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh, Ashok Kirtania, Kshodiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik, becoming the only female face in the new Bengal government.

Her elevation comes at a moment of political importance for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has repeatedly presented itself as a champion of women’s representation and has accused opposition parties of delaying the implementation of 33% reservation for women in legislative assemblies. The party is likely to view Paul’s inclusion in the government as symbolic and strategic in a state long dominated by women-centric political narratives under former Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee.

A two-time BJP Bengal vice president from Asansol Dakshin and Bengal vice president, Paul emerged as one of the party’s most popular women leaders during the 2026 Assembly election campaign. She retained her seat by defeating TMC’s Tapas Banerjee by over 40,000 votes, strengthening her standing within the state unit.

Before entering politics in 2019, Paul was a well-known figure in Kolkata’s fashion circle. She ran her own fashion brand ‘Inga’ and designed outfits for Bollywood celebrities including Sridevi and Hema Malini. Her work has often highlighted traditional Bengal crafts such as Kantha embroidery, and she has showcased her collections at events including Lakme Fashion Week.

Born and raised in Asansol in a middle-class family, Paul studied botany before pursuing studies in fashion technology and management. Over the years, she built a successful career in fashion before moving into politics with a focus on women’s empowerment and grassroots mobilization.

Her rise within the Bharatiya Janata Party was rapid. From joining the Mahila Morcha to becoming one of the party’s key campaigners in Bengal, Paul has presented herself as a “daughter of the soil” leader with strong appeal among women voters. Party insiders even floated her name during the race for chief minister’s post before the BJP finally picked Adhikari for the top job.

But Agnimitra Paul also faced controversy. According to her election certificate, she has 23 criminal cases pending against her relating to allegations including unlawful assembly, rioting and protest-related offences, although she has not been convicted in any case.
