The Malda incident, where judicial officers engaged in SIR work were on hold for hours, was pre-planned and motivated, the Supreme Court said on Monday. The Supreme Court also called for the case to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), saying that “local police cannot be trusted,” PTI reported.

The court ordered that 26 people arrested by the West Bengal Police in connection with the Malda incident be interrogated by the NIA, and also suspended the Bengal Chief Secretary of the Supreme Court for not taking the calls of the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice and asked him to apologise.

Seven judicial officers appointed by the Calcutta High Court were attacked by a large mob in Kaliachak last week over names being deleted from the electoral roll after a special intensified review in poll-bound West Bengal.

Political dispute over the Malda Gherao incident

The incident led to a political row between Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC and the BJP, with Banerjee claiming that the hostage-taking was pre-planned, HT reported.

She said the Election Commission of India is running super president rule by taking away all my powers.

Reacting to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the incident as a sign of ‘Maha Jungle Raj’ under the TMC government. PTI I mentioned.

“Even when judicial officers are not safe, how can you expect the common people to be safe under the TMC rule? What happened in Malda is an example of the TMC’s Maha Jungle Raj,” Modi said during an election rally in Cooch Behar.

Modi said that “democracy is bleeding every day on the sacred soil of Bengal” and accused Mamata Banerjee’s government of being “heavily bent on killing law and order”, referring to the incident in which judges were allegedly detained for hours during protests over voter list reviews.

Malda, a Muslim-majority border district, has the second-highest number of cases pending adjudication by judicial officials after Murshidabad. While there are 11,01,145 such cases in Murshidabad, Malda, with 8,28,127 cases, comes second.
