According to the police, three men, identified as Arif, were arrested about a year ago for vandalizing an idol in a temple in the village. After being released on bail, they allegedly threatened villagers and harassed witnesses in the temple case.

On Sunday morning, Arif and two others attacked four to six youths with rods after they allegedly lodged a complaint with the police, triggering further violence between members of the two communities, they said.

Gariaband Superintendent of Police Vedbrat Sirmore said tension escalated after Arif and two others attacked some people in Dudhkaiya and two nearby villages.

Enraged by this, some local residents surrounded the house of the accused and set it on fire.

As the violence spread, several vehicles were torched and stones and bricks were pelted at police personnel to control the situation. He said that five to six policemen were injured during the clash.

“Three accused who assaulted the villagers have been arrested and three cases have been registered against them,” the SP said, adding that additional forces have been sent to the village to restore order.

The situation is under control and is being closely monitored, police said.
