NEW DELHI: Recent issues in India-US relations include the imposition of higher tariffs by the US on Indian exports and changes implemented by the US in its visa regulations, which have affected students and professionals, the government told Parliament on Friday.

US-India interim deal expected to boost market access for Indian exporters: Govt tells Parl.Despite these developments, the two sides continued to engage and agreed on a framework for an interim agreement, under which reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods would be reduced to 18 percent, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said in a written reply to a question.

The External Affairs Ministry was asked the reasons for the “apparent strain” in Indo-US relations, particularly the “lack of progress” in trade talks and continued restrictions and uncertainty over work visas for Indian professionals.

“Recent issues in India-US bilateral relations include the imposition of higher tariffs by the US on India’s exports and changes implemented by the US in its visa rules, which have affected students and professionals,” he said.

“Despite these developments, both sides continued to engage and on February 2, 2026, India and the US agreed on a framework for an interim agreement, under which reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods would be reduced to 18 percent,” Singh said.

It is expected to help Indian exporters, especially MSMEs, create jobs, especially for women and youth, and protect farmers’ interests and rural livelihoods, the government said.

The MEA was also asked about taking diplomatic steps to safeguard India’s economic and people’s interests with the US.

“On the visa front, stakeholders from both sides have been engaged and the government’s representation has led to the issuance of clarifying FAQs, which has provided more light for the affected applicant category,” Singh said.

The MEA was asked to detail the tangible gains India has made for the Global South in terms of development finance, access to technology and debt relief beyond the summit-level announcement of the declaration.

India is committed to advancing people-centred development in the Global South through concrete infrastructure and community projects, financial and humanitarian assistance and capacity building through scholarship and training programmes, the Center said.

During India’s G20 Presidency, relentless efforts were made to mainstream Global South priorities, including the Voice of the Global South Summit.

“The African Union’s admission as a permanent G20 member reflects India’s commitment to expanding the voice of developing countries in global decision-making. India continues to be a major provider of development finance for the Global South and a model for technology deployment, including in the fintech space,” Singh said.

The government was also asked about the safety of its diaspora amid rising conflicts in West Asia.

The government said it continuously monitors geopolitical developments affecting India’s national interests and the welfare and security of Indian citizens abroad.

“Missions and posts regularly issue advisories, provide consular assistance and facilitate evacuation where required, supported by 24×7 helplines and platforms such as MADAD, CPGRAMS and eMigrate. Energy security is among India’s top priorities,” Singh said.

He said the government is pursuing a “multi-pronged strategy” covering diversification of supply sources, increased domestic production, expansion of alternative energy and advancement of energy transition, besides engaging with partner countries to ensure uninterrupted access to affordable energy.
