US citizen detained at Nepal border ‘entered India via sea without valid documents’

A US citizen was arrested at the Indo-Nepal border while trying to cross into Nepal without valid travel documents. The man was arrested by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) during a routine patrol in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainhua district under Sunoli police station limits, near boundary pillar no. 516, news agency PTI reported.

An official said that upon questioning, it was found that the American citizen, identified as 36-year-old Jordan Brown, entered India in 2025 via sea without any valid documents. A case was subsequently registered against Brown, SP (Maharajganj) Siddharth said, according to news agency ANI.

No travel documents were found in his possession, the additional SP said.

“I lost my passport in Thailand, traveled to Sri Lanka, then India.”

In a video message, the additional SP said: “Yesterday, on July 11, the State Security Service arrested a person near Sunauli for trying to enter Nepal without a permit. When questioned, he identified himself as Jordan Brown and stated that he is an American citizen from California.”

Siddharth said that during interrogation, Brown revealed that he had traveled to Thailand on a tourist visa, but lost his passport there. Brown then reached Sri Lanka via the sea route and then returned to India again via the sea route in November 2025.

“Since then, he has been residing in Goa. He was trying to travel to Nepal when he was arrested by the SSI. No valid travel documents were found in his possession,” the additional SP said. He said that Brown’s claims are currently being verified and a case has been registered against him at Sunoli police station under Sections 21/23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for entering India without valid documents. Siddharth added that further legal action is underway.

This comes days after the National Investigation Agency detained five Ukrainians and a US citizen for their alleged involvement in providing terrorist and combat training to ethnic armed groups in Myanmar, ANI reported. The six were produced before the Patiala House Court on Friday last week.

The accused allegedly entered India on tourist visas before traveling via Mizoram to Myanmar. In Myanmar, they were reported to have been in contact with ethnic armed groups working against the country’s junta. The NIA further alleged that the accused provided training and support regarding drone warfare and other military techniques to these groups, according to the NIA. The case is being investigated and the accused are currently in judicial custody.
