Delhi’s Nangloi area was thrown into a state of tension after a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus ran over pedestrians, killing two people on Monday morning, leading to an angry mob setting it on fire after vandalizing it.

According to Delhi Police, a young man riding a motorcycle was hit by a DTC bus, resulting in his instant death. An e-rickshaw and some people were also hit by the bus, leading to the death of another person, following which the injured were shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, ANI reported.

The accident led to unrest in the area, as people gathered at the scene, pelted the bus with stones and damaged the windows of several vehicles, PTI reported, citing police sources.

The police said, “Local residents set fire to the bus. The firefighting team is at the scene.”

Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said it received a call about a DTC bus catching fire at around 10 am. An officer in the Field Support Department told the news agency, “A bus was found on fire, and the windows of some other vehicles were damaged. The fire was completely extinguished by 11 a.m..”

Authorities later towed the burning bus. The causes that led to the accident are being further investigated.

DTC bus accidents

It is worth noting that public transport buses operate Delhi’s roads were involved in about 150 accidents, including 40 fatal ones, from 2024 to 2025, according to a report by PTI.

Delhi Transport Corporation buses were involved in 97 road accidents in 2024-25, of which 21 were fatal. These accidents led to deaths and injuries among passengers and pedestrians, according to data collected by the authority Delhi Government.

Aside from traffic rule violations, accidents were also linked to the lack of designated bus lanes, poor driver training, excessive speed, and mechanical errors.
