The suspense over government formation in Tamil Nadu finally ended on Saturday evening, with TVK chief C Joseph Vijay receiving the chief minister’s appointment letter from Governor RV Alrikar after minor parties, including VCK and IUML, supported him.

The tally of Vijay-led TVK reached 120 after the IUML and VCK on Saturday extended their support to the Vijay-led party, putting an end to days of speculation over the fate of government formation in Tamil Nadu. The last few days have been busy for Vijay and his party as they strive to secure majority support. Friday was a more hectic – and potentially frustrating – day as Vijay first met the Governor at Lok Bhavan for the third time since the election results came in, and later visited the Left Party offices to thank them for their support.

He finally met the governor on Saturday evening after the VCK and IUML extended support. The meeting came in the wake of initial confusion, as the governor was scheduled to travel to Kerala – where he is also in charge – amid ongoing preparations to form the government there.
However, Lok Bhavan did not provide details about Arlikar’s purpose for the Kerala trip which was later cancelled.

But the suspense over the Tamil Nadu government soon ended and the Lok Bhavan on Saturday said the oath ceremony would be held at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai on May 10 at 10 am.

However, there is another test awaiting Vijay. Governor Vijay directed that a vote of confidence be required for the Assembly on or before May 13, 2026.
In the polls held on April 23, TVK won 108 constituencies, including the two Vijay seats, and emerged as the single largest party. TVK founder Vijay will have to resign from one of the two constituencies he won, as per EC norms.
