A major landslide hit Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday, killing at least two people and injuring seven. As rescue operations continued to rescue people feared trapped under the rubble, horrifying images of the incident swept social media.

In the video, a large pile of mud, accumulated near Meenakshi Bridge in Kalladi as part of an ongoing tunnel road project linking Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, suddenly slides due to rain, knocking down trees and blowing away metal and cloth barriers erected at the construction site. The mudslide extended to the road, where the video showed several people, including women, running for their lives.

Videos also showed rescue personnel and nearby residents searching for anyone who may have been trapped. Initial reports indicate that residents rescued at least three people.

An eyewitness to the landslide was also heard saying: “Run fast, friends. Take a picture,” as the clip was broadcast on TV channels across India.

CCTV footage near the site also showed people running when the mudslide hit the road near Meenakshi Bridge in Kaladi.

Landslide in Wayanad | What we know

Police personnel and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with officials from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) were deployed for the rescue operation.

According to reports, at least seven people were confirmed missing due to the landslide, while seven others were rescued and are now injured. The death toll so far stands at two.

“Two people have been confirmed dead. After the road is cleared, the rescue work will be completed. We have directed all hospitals in Wayanad to treat the workers who were from outside Kerala. The preliminary report indicates that local residents were not affected by the accident,” Health Minister K Muraleedharan said.
