“Whereas, such disturbance may cause serious breach of peace and danger to public peace and pose risk to human life and property,” the order said, “however, the present circumstances require immediate action, rendering service of notice impractical.”
The order continued “Now, I, Ashish Das, District Magistrate, Ukhrul, in exercise of the powers vested in me under sub-section 1 of Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, hereby issue an order prohibiting the movement of any person outside their respective residences and obstructing any other law or action which may obstruct the law or action in this area. 8.02.2026 Evening from 7:00 until further orders.”
The decree will not apply to government officials and security, it added.
Officials said tension has been prevailing in the area since a member of the Tangkhul community was assaulted by seven to eight men in Litan village since Saturday night.
The matter was settled by the victim’s side and the head of Litan Sarekhong and both sides mutually agreed to resolve the issue through a traditional way through a meeting last Sunday.
However, the agreed meeting was not held as the family of the deceased failed to attend.
Instead, a group of villagers from neighboring Sikibung allegedly attacked the residence of the chief of Litan Sarekhong.
The villagers allegedly fired seven rounds as they passed by Liton police station to retreat.
