'Totally unacceptable': Israel condemns 'racially motivated' attack on two Indian workers in Ashkelon

New Delhi: Israel on Thursday condemned the attack on two Indian workers in the city of Ashkelon, describing the incident as “completely unacceptable.”The Israeli embassy in India also condemned the attack and said that action had been taken against those responsible.

She said in a post on the X website: “The attack on two Indian workers yesterday in Ashkelon by delinquents is completely unacceptable.

The Israeli police have arrested the perpetrators and will bring them to justice.”

The two workers were reportedly beaten in Ashkelon, located about 50 kilometers from Tel Aviv. Israeli media described the attack as a “targeted, racially motivated attack.”Congress leader Pawan Khera raised concerns over the incident and urged External Affairs Minister S.K.

Jaishankar to intervene. “It was a premeditated racist attack, planned through private conversations. This is not the first attack of its kind. Unfortunately, it may not be the last,” he said in a post on X.He added: “The government’s failure to provide adequate job opportunities at home has pushed Indian workers to look for work in Israel. It celebrates Indo-Israeli friendship when it sends Indian workers there. But when our people face barbaric treatment, they remain silent and shirk responsibility.”

The minister “should urgently look into the matter, ascertain the condition of the victim, and ensure that he gets adequate and free medical care if necessary,” he said, referring to Jaishankar.Khaira also wondered whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would raise this issue during his upcoming visit to Israel. “Prime Minister Modi will visit Israel soon. Will he raise the issue of racism and violent attacks against Indian citizens in Israel?” he asked.According to the TRT World website, the incident comes at a time when India chose not to join more than 80 countries that criticized Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank in a joint statement at the United Nations.Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Israel next week, his second trip to the country since 2017.
