First MLA Ritabrata Banerjee staked her claim as Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly with the support of 58 legislators last week, and now Member of Parliament (MP), Kakoli Ghosh, has publicly expressed her desire to secede with the support of 19 rebel MPs and the backing of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
TMC Crisis Live Updates | Key points
– Parliament Speaker Rathendra Nath Bose last week recognized 58 legislators from the Ritabrata Banerjee-led TMC as the main opposition bloc. The rebels accused the party leadership of acting in an authoritarian manner and openly challenged the role of TMC National Secretary General Abhishek Banerjee.
– Against the above backdrop, Mamata Banerjee has faced a new challenge in her urban political structure as uncertainty surrounds the future of senior leaders holding key mayoral posts like the party’s Firhad Hakim and Krishna Chakraborty who resigned from the mayoral posts of Kolkata and Bidhannagar last week.
– In the latest jolt for Mamata Banerjee, at least 14 legislators, led by TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh, met in Delhi and discussed secession in the presence of Bengal Chief Minister and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. About three kilometers from where party chief Mamata Banerjee was attending a meeting of the All India National Development Alliance (IND), the rebel TMC parliamentarians met at the residence of Union minister and BJP observer for Bengal elections Bhupinder Yadav for two hours. In the evening, the group met again at the residence of Birbhum MP Shatabdi Roy, who has held office for four times.
– Parasat Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar MP said that the rebel group decided to support the National Democratic Alliance. “Nearly 20 TMC MPs, including myself, have decided to support the NDA for Bengal’s development. We have decided to write to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and formally support the NDA,” an earlier HT report quoted the MP who resigned from all party posts last week as saying.
A fresh setback was dealt to the TMC on Monday when party leader Jehangir Khan was arrested near the Indo-Nepal border in connection with an extortion case, police said. The arrest comes after Khan was allegedly evading law enforcement agencies for several days amid multiple criminal investigations.

TMC crisis live: Party Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose attacks dissenters
TMC crisis live: Trinamool Parliament (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose on Tuesday slammed politicians who changed sides after the election results, questioning their ethics and calling the culture of political dissent a “disgrace”.
Taking to X, the journalist-turned-politician reaffirmed her loyalty to the Mamata Banerjee-led party while accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of destroying India’s democratic framework.
“The personal has become the political for me in 2024. I joined public life because I strongly believe that the @Narendramadi-led @BJP is destroying India’s precious democratic spaces, and I believe and believe in the constitutional fight of the opposition against the anti-constitutional, sectarian-minded BJP bent on fomenting religious wars.”

TMC crisis is live: The working culture of regional parties is clearly visible, says BJP on TMC rebellion
TMC crisis live: Regarding the Trinamool Congress (TMC) rebellion, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ghulam Ali Khatana said on Tuesday: “This clearly shows the working culture of regional parties, how they suppress their cadres and political leadership. There is no democracy in political parties. I don’t know how they made West Bengal a hub of lawlessness and illegal immigrants.”
“There was no rule of law there and by playing vote bank politics, they marginalized West Bengal. Now, things will improve and West Bengal will contribute to achieving Vixit Bharat,” the MP said.

TMC crisis live: How split will boost NDA’s strength in Parliament as rebel MPs want to join BJP-led alliance
TMC crisis live: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which leads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), can look forward to easier passage of key bills in the Lok Sabha as 20 Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators on Monday conveyed their decision to join the coalition as a separate group. In the Rajya Sabha, where the NDA already has a majority, the party is expected to gain another seat, as Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from the Upper House.
An increase in the strength of the Lok Sabha would help the ruling coalition pass controversial bills, including the delimitation bill that will pave the way for carving out new constituencies and increasing the number of seats in the Lok Sabha, a prerequisite for implementing 33% reservation for women in legislative assemblies. Other important bills that the government needs to support are the Constitution Amendment Bill 129 of 2024, and the Federal Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill 2026, which seeks simultaneous elections, which are currently being examined by a joint parliamentary committee.
