Temperatures are expected to rise further over the next two days, with temperatures in isolated pockets of the capital likely to reach 45 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The Met Department has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the IMD forecast, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 43°C and 45°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 26.3°C today.

The administration also expected mainly clear skies and strong surface winds during the day. The Meteorological Department added, “The sky is generally clear, and the surface winds are strong, reaching speeds of 20-30 kilometers per hour, sometimes reaching 40 kilometers per hour during the day.”

What is considered a heat wave?

Under IMD norms, a heat wave is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and remains at least 4.5 degrees Celsius above normal. A heat wave is also declared if the temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius or more, no matter how much higher than normal.

A “severe” heatwave is declared when the temperature is outside the normal temperature range by 6.5°C or more.

The IMD declares a heatwave only if such conditions are recorded at at least two stations within a meteorological division for two consecutive days. The official announcement will be issued on the second day.

The Meteorological Department said that a similar heat wave is likely to continue in large parts of northwest and central India in the coming days.

Delhi temperature forecast

Delhi’s air quality index today stands at 84.0, indicating good air quality in the city. People with respiratory problems should exercise caution, especially while planning outdoor activities. However, others can participate in regular outdoor activities. Being aware of the Air Quality Index (AQI) helps a person make informed decisions regarding their overall well-being while planning the day’s activities.
