Kottayam, In the wake of the Thrissur fireworks tragedy, the head of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church Basilius Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos, on Thursday urged people to exercise restraint in celebrations and prioritize human life over extravagance.

As many as 14 people were killed after explosions at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikode as part of the Thrissur Pooram scheduled to be held on April 26.
In a message, the Catholicos said Kerala was experiencing deep grief after the tragedy and noted that despite recurring disasters, preventive measures often only last until the next incident occurs.
“We must act wisely to ensure that such painful incidents are not repeated during festivals, holidays and other celebrations. We must consider whether innocent lives should be sacrificed for temporary joy,” he said.
He emphasized that it is not just rules or regulations, but rather a change in human conscience that should lead people to move away from excessive celebrations.
“All religions must take a considered and responsible stance in this regard. God is not pleased with fireworks, but rather with the purity of the believer’s heart,” he said.
He called for simplicity and urged that celebrations in Malankara Church institutions be kept modest.
“God is not pleased with lavish celebrations, but rather with love and mercy toward their fellow human beings,” he said, adding that people should also be mindful of economic challenges and avoid unnecessary spending.
The Catholicos also appealed to the congregation to use the funds allocated for the celebrations to support those facing financial difficulties.
“We can explore the possibility of using such funds to build homes for the needy. If we can make such a decision, it will be the greatest joy,” he said.
He added that the church will support such initiatives, and that he will personally participate in the celebrations of the first five parishes that adopt this model.
He called for a new beginning, urging believers to come together in prayer and action.
