The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified internal consultations to finalize its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, with several senior leaders in the running, and a final decision is expected from the party high command in the coming days, people aware of the developments said on Monday.

The sources said that at least eight names are under active consideration as the party seeks to balance organizational experience, regional representation and political strategy. Among those being discussed include Pawan Singh, Rakesh Tiwari, Guru Prakash Paswan, Vinod Tode, Sanjay Mayukh and Prem Ranjan Patel. It is also understood that Shivish Ram and Rituraj Sinha are in the accounts, indicating that the competition remains open and smooth.
The selection process is being closely monitored by the central command and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to take the final decision, sources said. “The leadership is studying the political messages, organizational needs and numbers very carefully. No decision has been taken yet,” said a senior party leader who requested anonymity.
There is also an internal debate on whether BJP president Nitin Nabin should be considered for the Rajya Sabha post. The sources indicated that if his name was removed, the decision would be taken directly by the senior leadership, which confirms the sensitivity of the step and its strategic importance.
Party leaders indicated that clarity on the candidates is likely after Shah returns to Delhi after his scheduled engagements. It is expected that several rounds of informal meetings and consultations will be held before the final list is announced.
The Rajya Sabha’s choices are also being viewed in the context of broader coalition governance in Bihar. Sources said the discussions involving former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) formed part of larger political calculations. He believes Kushwaha’s future path, including the possibility of a close alliance or merger with the BJP, will depend on his meeting with Amit Shah and the outcome of talks on seat sharing and political settlement.
Party insiders said the BJP is treating the Rajya Sabha elections as more than just a routine exercise. “These nominations are part of a long-term strategy. The party wants to strengthen its presence in the Upper House while also sending political signals in key states like Bihar,” a party leader said.
The sources added that the electoral calculation in the state council, support from allies, and class and regional equations are among the factors being evaluated. The leadership is keen to ensure that the final list reflects organizational loyalty and the party’s educational goals before the next elections.
While the BJP has not issued any official statement yet, an announcement is expected once the consultations are over. As the deadline approaches, party circles expect the final list of Rajya Sabha candidates to be revealed within days, putting an end to intense speculation within the organisation.
