The Bihar government has recommended a CBI probe into the recent death of a woman NEET examinee in Patna, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chowdhury said on Saturday.
RJD women activists demonstrate during their protest march against the rape and murder of a NEET student inside Shambhu Girls Hostel room, at Income Tax Roundabout in Patna, Bihar, India, Wednesday, 21, 2026.A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Bihar Police is probing the case.
The NEET aspirant, a resident of Jehanabad, was found unconscious at the Shambhu Girls Hostel in Patna’s Chitragupta Nagar earlier this month. He died in a private hospital on January 11 after being in a coma for several days. Her family has alleged that she was sexually assaulted, accusing authorities of trying to cover it up.
“Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ji has requested the Government of India to hand over the investigation into the Patna NEET student murder case (Case No-14/26) to the CBI. The case must be thoroughly unraveled in a transparent and fair manner,” Chaudhry said in a post on X.

The state’s home department also issued a notification recommending a CBI probe into the case under provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, which regulates the functioning of the country’s premier investigative agency.
The central government’s Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) will issue a notification, which is a mandatory requirement for initiating a CBI investigation in a state-related case. As per rules, prior approval of the state and DoPT is required to investigate any crime outside the agency’s jurisdiction, as law and order is a state matter.
The parents of a NEET aspirant in Bihar on Saturday alleged that the state police was trying to cover up the matter by denying the sexual assault and claiming it was a case of suicide.
Her postmortem report did not rule out the possibility of sexual assault, and this finding contradicts the police’s initial claim that medical reports and CCTV footage ruled out sexual assault. An employee of his hostel has been arrested in this case.
“The CBI can now register a separate case based on the FIR registered by the Patna police. The agency sleuths will collect all the evidence obtained by the state police and also record the statements of the suspect, the arrested person, hospital staff, family members and policemen, who initially investigated the case and decided it to be a case of suicide.”
