For a few moments, it was just the story of a young Indian Army officer proposing marriage to his long-term partner after achieving a career milestone in Nashik. But then the Internet happened, and thus questions about military protocol and security arose, turning newly commissioned Captain Bharat Bhardwaj’s wedding parade at the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) into a flashpoint.

The moment, captured on video, was widely shared on social media. Shown by Captain Bhardwaj He dressed in his ceremonial military uniform, walked down the runway, got down on one knee in front of his partner and presented him with a ring.
In a sign of acceptance of the proposal, his partner hugged him when he got up.
All this while a military helicopter was seen in the background. The couple later took photographs together.
The video quickly gained attention on social media, with many users calling it a “wholesome moment” and calling it an example of “love that takes flight.”

But netizens’ focus quickly shifted from the suggestion itself to whether the gesture was appropriate in a military setting.
Meanwhile, Hizb ut-Tahrir also learned that the army has taken note of the matter and is likely to demand an explanation from the young officer.
The training school in Nashik operates under the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) and trains aviation personnel including officers from the Indian Army and Indian Navy, as well as officers from friendly foreign countries. Officers trained there specialize in tactical aviation roles.
These details have led many social media users to question whether filming and publicly sharing a proposal from within a defense training institution is permissible under Army regulations.

Criticism extended beyond the public display itself. Some users raised concerns about military discipline. Neeraj Ranjan, an X user who described himself as a “proud veteran” in his bio, questioned whether established military procedures had been followed.
He asked, “Has the woman’s identity and background been verified through the necessary security procedures? Was prior approval obtained from the relevant military authorities for such an act during a military parade?” books.
Another user said that the issue is not about the officer’s character or patriotism, but rather about maintaining military standards.
Support
As criticism mounted online, several retired army officers publicly defended Captain Bhardwaj and rejected suggestions that the proposal amounted to a serious breach of discipline or security.
Lieutenant General (retd) Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon strongly defended the officer and termed the criticism as misplaced. He wrote on the
“If you can’t find fault with his professional abilities, don’t do this for this pure gesture of love and belonging,” he added.
Retired Lt. Gen HS Panag said such incidents were not unusual while on duty and said young officers should not be subjected to undue scrutiny.
“I dealt with many of these issues in service. I did my best to protect and preserve the dignity and free spirit of enthusiastic young officers and soldiers. I made it a point to check their confidential reports and correct them if the more stringent commanders in the chain of command viewed them differently. At worst, I issued a general avoidance letter without mentioning names or the incident,” he wrote on X.
Colonel (retired) Sanjay Pandey said the photo could have been used positively in the Army’s recruitment efforts.
“Best Image from Indian Army Series ‘Got It in You?’ Recruitment drive. Seizing such rare events to strengthen organizations requires vision. “Someone has got it wrong,” he said.
He added that there was still “time to recover” the situation, writing: “No statements, no leaflets – just put this poster all over India.”
Former Chief of Integrated Defense Staff Lt. Gen (retd) Satish Dua also rejected allegations that the images pose any security threat.
“There is a lot of toxicity on social media in this photo of a young captain proposing in front of a helicopter. On many occasions, Army equipment is open for public viewing and photography. There is no security breach. This young pilot lives far away from family and friends more often than not. So be it,” he said on X.
Likewise, retired Lt. Gen DP Pandey criticized the reaction to the proposal and said the controversy had been blown out of proportion. In a detailed response, he said that the proposal was made during the tea break and not during the show itself and at a time when photography was permitted.
Clarification
Explaining the proposal, Captain Bhardwaj said that the occasion marked the perfect moment as the trainees completed a major milestone in their careers.
“We all became pilots and instructors today. It was a big day for all of us. Our hard work paid off today,” he said, adding that it was also an important day for his family.
Bhardwaj said that he was in a relationship with his partner for five years and wanted to make this day special for her as well.
“I don’t think there is any better day than this to propose to her. I wanted to make this day memorable for my fiancée as well. That was the whole idea,” he told news agency ANI.
Notably, something similar happened in 2018, when Thakur Chandresh Singh, after being commissioned in the Rajputana Rifles after training at the Officers’ Training Academy in Chennai, proposed to his partner after graduation. This photo also went viral and attracted widespread public reaction.
