The 5% Muslim quota in Maha lapsed and was officially abolished

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

MUMBAI: Eleven years after the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP-Sena government scrapped the 5% Muslim quota in government jobs and education, the Mahayoti government has scrapped a circular clarifying the process of issuing caste validity certificates for the quota.

Officials said the long-awaited process was completed after a query was raised in the last session of the state assembly. The 5% minority quota was introduced by the Congress-NCP-led government in June 2014. However, the law expired by December 2014 as it was not converted into law under the subsequent BJP-Sena government led by Fadnavis. The Supreme Court petition also led to the suspension of job quotas. In March 2015, the Fadnavis government issued an order formally revoking the ordinance. However, a relevant circular on caste health certificates for minorities issued by the Ministry of Social Justice was overlooked. This circular is now cancelled. “This is just a formality,” one official said.
