Tamil Nadu government formation news live: It has been four days since the assembly election results in Tamil Nadu were announced, but the future of government formation in the state remains uncertain. While actor and politician Vijay Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) won over 100 seats in the elections, he fell short of about 10 seats to cross the majority mark. Even with Congress’s support, the party can only get 113 seats, which is still short of the 118 mandate needed to form a government.

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlikar said on Thursday that in his second meeting with Vijay in two days, the politician was told that forming a majority was “essential” to form the government. However, Vijay’s supporters termed the decision wrong and demanded that he be allowed to prove majority in the House.

According to a PTI report, TVK held a crucial meeting of the party’s MLAs on Thursday, during which the lawmakers sought to know from party general secretary “Bussy” N Anand when the government would be formed. In response, they were told that they had to be patient and that “party chief Vijay was making all efforts,” the agency report said, citing a source.

Here are some key developments:

Where do the numbers stand? TVK won 108 seats in the assembly elections in a stunning display for the new party. Of these, Vijay won two of them, Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, and as per the mandate of the Election Commission of India, he will have to give up one seat, reducing the number to 107. With the support of the Congress, the total number of seats has risen to 113, but is still short of the 118 majority mark in the 243-seat Assembly.

What did the governor of Tennessee say? The Tamil Nadu Governor said that TVK has not yet received majority support to form the government. “During the meeting (with Vijay), the Governor made it clear that the required majority support was not provided in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which is necessary to form the government,” a statement said. Thursday’s meeting was the second time in two days that Vijay was returned without approval to form the government.

Which parties support TVK? So far, only Congress has publicly declared its support for TVK in forming the government. There was a buzz around the AIADMK, which won 47 seats, supporting Vijay’s party. However, there is no confirmation to this end.
