TVK chief Vijay meets Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlikar to demand formation of government at Lok Bhavan in Chennai on Friday.

TVK chief Vijay meets Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlikar to demand formation of government at Lok Bhavan in Chennai on Friday.

Tamil Nadu CM Section Concert Live: Excitement over government formation in Tamil Nadu intensified on Saturday as actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay paid his third visit in three days to Governor Rajendra Arlikar, in a bid to secure enough support to form the next government. Accompanied by senior leaders of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Vijay presented messages of support from the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Lok Bhavan in Chennai.

But there has been no official announcement yet from the governor’s office. TVK has not yet been able to clearly show majority support in the 234-member TN Assembly, people familiar with the developments said.

TVK inches are close to the majority mark

In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a party or alliance needs 118 members of the local legislature to cross the majority mark and form the government.

The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam Party won 108 seats on its own, emerging as the largest single party in the elections.

The party currently enjoys support from:

  • 5 Congress MLAs
  • 2 CPI MLAs
  • 2 MLAs for CPI(M).

This brings the total support for the camp led by Vijay to 117 army members.

However, Vijay won from two constituencies and must vacate one seat within 14 days after the results are officially notified. In light of the current situation, the group has actually reached 117 members, just one less than the number required for a majority, which is 118 seats.

If Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) formally extends its support through MLAs, the TVK-led bloc’s tally will rise to 119, comfortably crossing the majority mark.

Left parties are offering support, and the VCK is undecided

The CPI and CPI(M), which each have two MLAs, have officially extended support to TVK and delivered letters supporting the party.

But uncertainty persists over the position of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). HT sources said any letter of support from VCK was not part of the memorandum submitted by TVK to the governor on Friday.

However, Communist Party of India State Minister M Veerapandian noted that VCK president Thul Thirumavalavan has already indicated his support if the Left parties support TVK.

“TVK approached CPI, CPI(M) and VCK. We held our party meeting. It is normal in a democracy to have ups and downs. The people of Tamil Nadu supported and decided to elect TVK. We took a decision in a democratic way,” Veerapandian said.

CPI(M) State Minister P Shanmugam said the Left parties have decided to support TVK to avoid prolonged uncertainty in the state.

“Since if the government is not formed by the 10th, President’s rule will come. The BJP is trying to enter Tamil Nadu through the back door. So, to end this, CPI and CPI(M) have decided to support TVK,” he said.

Shanmugam also made it clear that the Left parties would support the government from outside and would not seek ministerial posts.

Congress wants to join the government

The Indian National Congress has indicated that it wants to be part of the government rather than providing external support.

Tamil Nadu Congress president K Selvapirunthagai said TVK had offered the party two ministerial posts and one Rajya Sabha seat.

“They (TVK) said two ministers and one Rajya Sabha member. However, the final decision on the number of portfolios and specific demands rests with the Congress national leadership,” he said.

At the same time, a social media post by VCK Deputy Secretary General Fani Arasu demanded the position of deputy prime minister alongside a ministerial position for the party, adding another layer to the negotiations.

IUML denies supporting TVK

Meanwhile, the Indian Muslim League denied reports of support for TVK.

IUML leader AM Shahjahan dismissed speculations about support messages and reiterated the party’s alliance with the DMK-led alliance.

“We have not supported anyone. We have not sent any message to anyone. These are all rumours. We are continuing the alliance under the leadership of the DMK,” he told reporters.

Asked whether the party would support TVK, Shahjahan replied: “There is no doubt about it. We are continuing under the DMK alliance.”

Tamil Nadu CM oath ceremony live: AMMK files police complaint against TVK over ‘fake’ support letter claim

Tamil Nadu CM oath ceremony live: AMMK has filed a complaint with Guindy police against TVK, alleging that the party used a “fake” letter of support while demanding to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

According to police officials, a petition was filed by AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran, ANI reported. However, no FIR was registered in the case till Saturday morning.

The complaint comes in the wake of dramatic political developments late at night after Dinakaran visited the office of Assistant Commissioner of Police in Guindy.

Speaking to reporters, Dinakaran accused the Vijay-led TVK of submitting a forged copy of a letter to Governor Rajendra Arlikar, purportedly seeking support from AMMK’s lone MLA-elect from Mannargudi, S Kamaraj.

TVK denied the allegations and accused Dinakaran of spreading misinformation during the tense government formation process.

Tamil Nadu CM oath ceremony live: How numbers stack up in TN

Tamil Nadu CM Division Ceremony Live: The race to form the government in the state has now turned into a tight numbers game, with every MLA becoming crucial as TVK Tamil star Vijay seeks to cross the 118-member majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.

Here are the numbers so far in the TVK alliance:

  • TVK: 108 seats (Vijay contested 2 seats, bringing the tally to 107)
  • Congress: 5 multilateral agreements
  • CPI: 2 MLAs
  • CPI(M): 2 MLAs

This takes the Vijay-led bloc to 117 multilateral agreements – just one short of the 118 needed to achieve a majority.

The spotlight is now firmly on the VCK, which has 2 MLAs. If the VCK officially supports TVK, the number of the alliance will increase to 119, giving… Vijay has a clear path to forming the government.

Meanwhile, the Indian Muslim League denied extending support to TVK and said it was still with the DMK alliance.

On the other hand, the DMK won 59 seats while the AIADMK bagged 47, raising speculation about possible realignments after the elections if neither party can prove a majority.

With the Assembly’s term ending on May 10, the race over the final numbers has tightened, and even the support of one or two local parliamentarians could decide who forms the next government in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu swearing-in ceremony live: What happens if a government is not formed by tomorrow?

Tamil Nadu CM swearing-in ceremony live: The term of the 16th TN Legislative Assembly ends on May 10 (Sunday), leaving little time for the parties to complete the government formation process.

As the largest party, TVK is expected to get the first chance to form the government if it can show majority support.

The Vijay-led party currently falls short of the required 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly. If he fails to prove a majority, Governor Rajendra Arlikar may explore other options, including calling for an alternative alliance led by the DMK or AIADMK.

However, if no party or coalition can show majority support, the country can move towards president’s rule.

In such a situation, the Governor may recommend central rule in the state, which may ultimately lead to the dissolution of the Assembly and holding of new elections within six months.
