Suvendu, 55, was on Friday elected as the BJP’s Bengal legislative party leader, paving the way for him to be sworn in as the state’s first BJP chief minister.

The main meeting to select the next West Bengal Chief Minister was chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata.

Addressing the party leaders at the meeting, Amit Shah congratulated MLA-elects and Suvendu Adhikari, saying that people placed their trust in the BJP in the Bengal elections despite several incidents of violence and threats.

“The atmosphere created since the communist era was deepened by Mamata Banerjee and it was almost impossible to cast your vote there… I am extremely grateful for the great victory that the people of Bengal have given us by trusting the BJP and our leader Narendra Modi,” Shah said.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Adhikari oath ceremony:

Date and time

The swearing-in ceremony for Suvendu will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11 am.

Where will the party be held?

Suvendu will take oath as Prime Minister at Brigade Parade in Kolkata. The oath will be administered by Governor RN Ravi.

Who will all attend the Adhikari section ceremony?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah and the chief ministers of NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony, which the party hopes will underscore the political transformation in Bengal.

Bengal elections and the ouster of Mamata

The BJP won the West Bengal Assembly elections with a historic win of 207 seats out of 264. The high-stakes elections were held in two phases on April 23 and 29, while the votes were counted on May 4. When the results revealed a surprise to the TMC, Mamata alleged vote rigging and initially refused to resign. Her claim was supported by the India bloc.

The Bengal governor finally dissolved the assembly on Thursday, ultimately ousting Mamata from power.

Notably, Chandranath Rath, a close aide of Suvendu, was shot dead late on Wednesday night amid the high post-election political drama in Bengal.
