Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin on Saturday slammed his long-term ally Congress for “severing ties” with his party in “a single day”, and thanked the Left parties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) for remaining part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), despite their decision to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the next state government.

“After the election results were announced, you were watching the unfolding events. The Assembly election results came out in such a way that no party got a majority to form a government,” Stalin said in a statement posted on X, soon after TVK secured the support of two VCK MLAs, paving the way for the formation of his coalition government in the state.

TVK, which bagged 108 seats in a stunning debut in the Assembly, now has the support of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML. While the initial tally stood at 121, TVK chief Vijay – who won two seats – will resign from one seat, taking the party’s effective strength to 107. Thus, the TVK-led coalition will hold 120 seats in the 234-member House, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 118.

Meanwhile, the DMK won 59 seats.

He stressed that the DMK-led SPA did not get enough seats to form a government in the state, and said: “We got a large number of votes.”

Referring to a previous media interview, he said: “I already mentioned in an interview with the media that we will not be an obstacle to the formation of a new government and that the Kurdistan Democratic Party will work as a constructive opposition party.”

He stressed that he gave priority during a meeting of party legislators to the interest of the party and pledged not to make a decision on the course of action except after consulting with the executive headquarters. He said: “In a situation where no one got a majority to form a government, many people suggested alternative ideas. As far as I was concerned, whatever decision was taken by the allied parties, I intended to respect their decision, work integratedly and ensure the formation of a stable government. My opinion was that we should not pave the way for another election.”

Criticizing the long-term Congress ally, Stalin said: “The Congress legislators who contested and won on behalf of the alliance did not come to Anna Arivalayam (the KDP headquarters) to express their gratitude. In one day, he left the Congress party, severing its relationship with the KDP.”

Hizb ut-Tahrir reached out to Congress leaders for a response but was unable to get an immediate reaction.

He also highlighted the position of CPI(M) and VCK, stating that while they support TVK to avoid a “critical crisis” and will remain under the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance on a “policy level basis”. “This expression of comradeship shows the faith they have in the DMK, which is a strong belief in its principles,” he added.

The CPI, CPI(M), IUML and VCK are contesting the 2026 polls as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).

He also expressed his gratitude to IUML national president Khader Mohiuddin, MDMK president Vaiko, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth and MMK president Jawaharullah.

Speaking about his tenure, Stalin claimed that the DMK developed Tamil Nadu in all sectors and made the state prosperous. “We have paved the way for every individual to benefit through several schemes.”

He added: “My personal wish is that the next new government will continue these plans that possess wise thinking and resourceful planning.”

He further urged the new administration to prioritize the ongoing care of women, youth, students and marginalized communities. “I ask the new government to work with this in mind. I once again convey my best wishes to the new government that will be formed,” he said.
