The government is seeking opposition support to pass the amendment bill, which aims to implement reservation for women in the Lok Sabha from the 2029 general elections, based on the 2011 census.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the opposition parties to support the amendment, stressing the need to reach a consensus. “This is the desire of every sister and daughter in this country, and we must fulfill it unanimously,” he said at an event in Dehradun on Tuesday.
While the opposition parties expressed support for early implementation of women’s reservation, they expressed strong objections to the draft demarcation bill. They have questioned the basis of redrawing constituencies and the proposal to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from the current 543 to as many as 850 seats.
PM Modi urges consensus on women’s reservation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the opposition parties to support the constitutional amendment to ensure reservation for women comes into effect from the 2029 general elections.
“This is the desire of every sister and daughter in this country, and we must fulfill it unanimously,” he said at an event in Dehradun on Tuesday.
The opposition supports quotas and opposes border demarcation
The opposition parties on Wednesday said they fully supported the early implementation of women’s reservation but expressed strong opposition to the demarcation bill. Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge chaired a meeting of opposition parties to discuss their stand.
“We all support the Women’s Reservation Bill, but the way (the government) has brought this bill, we have reservations,” Karji said.
Kharji added that the opposition parties have consistently supported women’s reservations. “We have decided to continue supporting women’s reservation, as we did in 2010 and 2023, when we unanimously supported the constitutional amendment,” he said.

Parliament Special Session Live: Rijiju defends timing of submission of proposals
Special Parliamentary Session Live: Defending the government on why the bills were introduced just days before elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told HT: “If we bring it before the Lok Sabha elections, they will say you are bringing it for the benefit… If we don’t do it now, after five months, there is another round of elections. After that, you will say you are doing it for the Uttar Pradesh elections. Every year there are two rounds of elections… How can this issue be disrupted?” And linking it to the state elections? It has nothing to do with it. This is a completely undesirable argument put forward by the opposition. Let us be very clear, women’s reservation cannot be equated to any kind of political agenda or used for political gain, it is just a case of implementation.”

Parliament Special Session Live: Rahul Gandhi says reservation for women should take into account caste census
Special Session of Parliament Live: “The fact is that if Modi ji has his way, the share of small states, southern states and northern states will be reduced.” Ruqaya, which is a great loss for them. I consider this an anti-national activity. Our position is clear: If you want to reserve seats, do it on the basis of OBC census and 2026 census. If you want to implement the Women’s Bill, it already exists and we will give you full support. But we will not allow action against OBCs and southern and smaller states,” Gandhi said in a video message.

A special session of Parliament Live: What is the border demarcation process and why is the opposition protesting against it?
Direct Special Parliamentary Session: The biggest point of contention over this practice is the north-south divide, with northern India experiencing high population growth benefiting from more proportionate seats, while south India – a large contributor to GDP (about 30-31%) – gets lower proportionate seats due to lower population growth. The Southern States have repeatedly indicated that mere population alone should not be the criterion for such revisions or additions.

Special session of Parliament live: Stalin burns a copy of the draft demarcation law
Special Session of Parliament Live: Tamil Nadu MK Stalin on Thursday burnt a copy of the Delimitation Bill, calling it a “black law” and claiming that it seeks to turn Tamils into “refugees” in their own lands.
Stalin also raised the black flag and raised slogans against the proposed legislation, hours before Parliament convened in a special session.
“Let the fires of resistance spread across Tamil Nadu. Down with the arrogance of the fascist BJP,” he said in a statement. Comparing the anti-India protests of the 1960s, he added that state resistance once forced the Center to retreat.
“Today, I have rekindled that fire by burning a copy of this black law and hoisting the black flag. This fire will spread across the Dravidian land. It will burn, it will rage, and the BJP’s arrogance will be brought to its knees,” he said. (PTI)
