The DGP told reporters that the ‘Nyaya Sanhita Expo’, which will be inaugurated in the presence of Prime Minister Mohan Sharan Majhi, aims to create awareness about India’s reforms in criminal laws and transformation in the criminal justice system.

Khurania said it will help citizens understand the new criminal laws – Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam – which together represent the most comprehensive reform of criminal laws in independent India.

These new laws, which came into force on 1 July 2024, replaced the previous colonial-era legal framework consisting of the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act.

The exhibition will remain open to the public from March 7 to 10.

Besides inaugurating the exhibition, Shah, who is scheduled to arrive here on Thursday evening on a two-day visit to Odisha, will attend several other official programmes.

During the programme, Shah will also inaugurate 20 new cyber police stations in virtual mode, the DGP said.

“We have noticed an improvement in the conviction rate with each passing month after the new laws came into effect,” Khorania said. “I hope the conviction rate will improve further in the coming days.”

The Director-General of Police said that the new criminal laws paid special attention to dealing with crimes committed against women and children, noting that the police department rescued more than 5,000 missing women and children during a special campaign in January.

He said the police had taken steps to strengthen forensic laboratories in the state by deploying additional manpower and modern equipment.

Khurania also spoke about the ongoing ‘Operation Cyber Kavach’ to crack down on cyber fraudsters, an enforcement drive against illegal transportation of ganja and other narcotic substances.
