New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal and two others immunity from arrest for two weeks in a case related to alleged cheating by a user of the matrimonial platform.

The top court asked Mittal to approach the high court for interim bail.

The case stems from a complaint by a Hyderabad woman that she was cheated ₹11 lakh is a person who used a fake profile on shaadi.com and the platform failed to properly verify the user’s details.

“Since the quashing application has not been decided on merits, we set aside the impugned order and remand the matter to the High Court for consideration on merits. The criminal cases are accordingly restored to their original files. It will be dealt with by the High Court on its merits. This Court has not expressed any opinion on the merits,” the Supreme Court said.

“Meanwhile, the petitioner shall make a prayer for interim relief before the High Court. For eight weeks from today, no coercive action shall be taken against the petitioner,” it added.

Senior advocate Atmaram Nadkarni, appearing for Mittal, submitted that he was running a matrimonial site, which was basically just a matchmaker.

“I am only facilitating the fair. We are cooperating with the investigation. But why am I the accused?” Nadkarni asked.

On June 26, the apex court issued notice to the Telangana government and stayed all proceedings.

The Telangana High Court had last year refused to quash the FIR registered against Mittal and two others named as accused in the case, Vignesh and Satish.
