SBI employees under the aegis of All India Bank Employees Federation (AISBISF) have threatened to go on a two-day nationwide strike starting May 25 to press for various demands, including appointment of adequate staff.

If the strike occurs, it will impact SBI’s banking operations for five days across the country, with the fourth Saturday and Sunday falling before the strike date.

In addition, there will be a holiday in many states on the occasion of Eid al-Adha on May 27, a day after the strike ends.

The demands also include appointing messengers, recruiting armed guards, and changing the option of pension fund manager for NPS employees, AISBISF said in a statement.

The union also called on the bank to stop outsourcing permanent jobs, as it creates a direct risk of data leakage, misuse, fraud and identity theft, jeopardizing customer confidence and exposing the bank to serious reputational and legal consequences.

Another requirement relates to the appointment of the Director of Labor Personnel to the Board of Directors.

She said that despite the provision requiring the appointment of a committee provided by the representative union, this democratic and legal right of employees has been consistently ignored.

She added that this continued inaction reflects the deliberate denial of workers’ representation at the highest level of decision-making, which is completely unacceptable.

The Office of the Chief Labor Commissioner is scheduled to hold a reconciliation meeting on May 23 with the union and management to reach common ground to avoid a strike.
