The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appointed Sanjeev Jain as India’s next ambassador to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea.

The Middle East Airlines said in its official statement on Monday that Jain is expected to take over the job soon.

A 2008 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer, currently serving as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Cabo Verde.
Jain Aliawati will succeed Longkumer, who is currently India’s Ambassador to North Korea, having been appointed to the position on June 16, 2025.
In accordance with the Middle East Agreement, relations between India and North Korea were generally characterized by friendship, cooperation and understanding.
Consular relations with North Korea were established in March 1962.
According to the Middle East News Agency, the Consulate General of India was established in North Korea in 1968, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established at the embassy level on December 10, 1973.
According to the Middle East Agreement, after the Korean War of 1950-1953, the United Nations set up a 9-member Resettlement Committee headed by India. The role of the Committee in the exchange of prisoners of war, headed by Major General KS Thimmaya, was highly appreciated.
Views are regularly and meaningfully exchanged on bilateral issues of mutual interest through the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) mechanism.
The Middle East Airlines had indicated in a previous statement that India had urged North Korea to refrain from conducting nuclear and ballistic missile tests to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
India supports all efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy.
Previously, India welcomed the inter-Korean summit meeting held in Panmunjom on April 27, 2018 and in Pyongyang in September 2018.
India also welcomed the historic summit held on June 12, 2018 in Singapore and on February 27-28 in Hanoi between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and expressed its hope that this participation would help reduce tensions and pave the way for lasting peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
