New Delhi: The State Names Authority headed by Prime Minister Rekha Gupta has changed the names of nine metro stations in Delhi.The authority, which considered proposals to change the names of 21 metro stations, retained 12 stations, amended seven and renamed two, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.Gupta said that the names of the metro stations were finalized in keeping with public sentiments and local identities.The modified station names are: Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar (earlier Prashant Vihar), Jagatpur-Wazirabad (earlier Jagatpur), Nanak Biu-Dehrawal Nagar (earlier Dehrawal Nagar), Khanpur-Vayusinabad (earlier Khanpur), Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar (earlier Sonia Vihar), Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (earlier Mayur) Vihar Pocket 1), and Mangolpur Kalan-West Enclave (formerly West Pocket).Moreover, North Pitampura has been renamed to Hyderpur village and Pitampura to Madhuban Chowk according to their local identities, the statement said.The names that have been retained as originally suggested in the detailed project reports are: Majlis Park, Bhalaswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Soorghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, Maujpur-Babarpur.The Prime Minister said that metro stations are not just transit points, but also reflect the identity and cultural importance of the areas they serve.
Therefore, each name was finalized only after careful and thoughtful deliberation.Key factors, including the local identity of the areas, their historical, social and cultural significance, and recommendations from representatives of the local public and citizens, were discussed when finalizing the names, she said, adding that such proposals would be considered in the future as well, if found reasonable.
