A sudden spell of heavy rain and snowstorms disrupted daily life in Pune on Monday, leaving several parts of the city submerged in water. Heavy rains in the afternoon caused traffic jams in major areas.

Districts like Aundh, Baner, Malungi and Baliwadi bore the brunt of the sudden turn in weather. The rain was accompanied by strong winds, which disrupted movement and made transportation difficult during peak hours, according to a report issued by news agency PTI. Floods that submerged roads in several pockets slowed traffic and affected routine movement.

On Tuesday, March 31, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

What’s behind the weather change?
The changing weather is associated with the evolution of weather conditions in western India. The infiltration of moisture from the Arabian Sea, along with instability in the lower atmosphere, creates suitable conditions for thunderstorms.

Weather forecast for Pune for 7 days
Next week in Pune is expected to remain somewhat unpredictable, with a mix of heat, cloud cover and intermittent thunderstorm activity, especially in the mid-week period. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms until April 2.
March 31 (Tuesday): The day is expected to start on a partly cloudy note, but cloud cover is expected to increase in the afternoon. There is a possibility of very light rain for a short period accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and active winds. April 1 – 2 (Wednesday – Thursday): Conditions are likely to stabilize slightly, and the sky will be partly cloudy. Thunderstorm activity cannot be completely ruled out in isolated pockets, especially later on April 2.
April 3-4 (Friday – Saturday): It is expected that these two days will witness a more active weather phase. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely, especially in the afternoon and evening.
