Thousands of workers in Palwal and Faridabad staged protests in their areas on Monday, alleging that the factory management had not issued any notification on the minimum wage increase announced by the Haryana government last week. About 7,500 workers participated in the protests, according to district administration officials.

In Palwal, police cleared the highway for protesting workers. In Faridabad, they were pacified by labor department and district administration officials after they assured that they would get the increased wages from April 1.

At least 3,200 workers in Palwal’s Prithla area blocked the Agra-Delhi Expressway for about two hours, causing traffic jams, according to Labor Department officials. The blockade was later removed by police.

“The factory managements are not issuing any circulars to the workers, which is leading to mistrust,” said Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) (Haryana) general secretary Jay Bhagwan.

Officials said that the protests occurred due to a lack of communication between workers and company management and rumors. Faridabad Deputy Commissioner Aayush Sinha said directions have been issued to all industries to inform workers that the wage hike as per the government notification will be effective on April 1.
