Prime Minister Modi shared several pictures from his meeting with Mammootty, his wife Salvath Kutty, his son Dulquer Salmaan, his wife Amal and his daughter Suromi.

“Met famous actor Mammootty and his family after the Padma ceremony earlier today,” PM Modi said in the post.

Earlier in the day, Mammootty received the Padma Bhushan award from President Draupadi Murmu.

This award is one of the highest civilian honors in India, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema, especially the Malayalam film industry.

The 74-year-old ‘Mathilocal’ star received the award at the second civil investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among other dignitaries.

Among those present at the ceremony was Dulquer Salmaan, Mammootty’s son and popular actor, who clapped and cheered when the Malayalam cinema legend called ‘Mamuka’ was awarded the country’s third highest civilian honour.

He had worn an elegant classic badgala with a crisp white shirt for the party. As he came forward to receive the honour, he was seen welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reciprocated with a warm smile.

In January 2026, the actor who has dominated the Malayalam film industry for over five decades, while also starring in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada films and having a repertoire of over 400 films, was named as one of the recipients of the Padma Bhushan award.

Reacting to the announcement, the veteran actor expressed his gratitude by simply saying ‘thank you’, while media insiders asked him to respond. He is widely respected as a goodwill ambassador for many social causes and a sponsor of many charitable initiatives.

Regarded as one of India’s most accomplished actors, with a global fan following, Mammootty made his debut in a cameo role in the 1971 film ‘Anubhavangal Paalichakal’ and has since built an impressive body of work spanning multiple genres and languages.

Mammootty is also a three-time National Film Award winner. He received his first National Film Award for Best Actor in 1989 for his exceptional performance in the Malayalam films Oru “Vadakkan Veeragatha” and “Mathilukal”.

He received this honor for the second time for his popular roles in ‘Vidheyan’ and ‘Ponthan Mada’. In 1999, Mammootty received his third National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the bilingual biopic ‘Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’.

Padma Awards – One of the highest civilian awards in the country, awarded in three categories, namely Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
