Just five months after moving into a powerful legal family in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a 33-year-old woman was found dead inside her matrimonial home — leaving behind disturbing conversations about feeling “trapped,” a husband on the run, conflicting claims of abuse and mental illness, and CCTV footage that is now under intense scrutiny as investigators probe allegations of dowry molestation and murder.

The woman, originally from Noida in Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging at her in-laws’ house in Katara Hills area on May 12. Her lawyer husband and mother-in-law, a retired judge, have been named in the FIR related to the dowry death, while the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigates allegations of harassment, assault and destruction of evidence.
The case sparked outrage on social media and drew attention due to the defendant’s family’s legal background, several alleged lapses in the investigation and the emergence of CCTV footage from the night of the incident.
Here are five developments that have kept the issue surrounded by questions:
1. Powerful legal family, runaway husband
The accused’s husband works as a lawyer, while his mother is a retired judge who also held senior judicial and academic positions. The victim’s family repeatedly claimed that the influence of the accused’s family could harm the investigation.
Recently, a Bhopal court rejected the husband’s anticipatory bail application, following which the police announced A $A reward of 10,000 pounds for anyone who provides information leading to his arrest. However, the retired judge was granted anticipatory bail earlier.

The victim’s father has publicly expressed fears that the accused may use “money and power” to secure relief from higher courts unless an immediate arrest is made.
2. Chilling conversations about feeling “trapped”
In WhatsApp messages shared by the woman’s family, she repeatedly described feeling “trapped,” “suffocated” and emotionally broken within her marriage.
In one letter to her mother, she allegedly wrote: “These people will not let me cry, nor will they give me a reason to smile.” In another, she said she felt “very trapped.”
She also claimed that her husband accused her of carrying another child after she expressed her desire to terminate her pregnancy. Hadiths indicate that she repeatedly begged her family to take her home from Bhopal.
Letters to friends painted a similarly bleak picture. She allegedly warned one of her friends against rushing into marriage and said that staying at home all day in Bhopal was worrying.
3. CCTV footage complicates the timeline
New CCTV footage from the night of the incident has emerged as key evidence in the investigation.
One clip reportedly shows the woman walking up the stairs inside the house shortly before the incident. Another shows her husband trying to perform CPR on her twice while his mother goes into another room. Two other men were later seen helping carry her downstairs.
Police are also investigating why the family took the woman to hospital before informing the authorities and whether there was a delay in treatment despite the hospital being nearby. According to the victim’s relatives, she was declared “not breathing” about 15 minutes after she last spoke to her mother on the phone.
4. The investigation is under the cloud after the forensic examination
The investigation came under intense scrutiny after police admitted that the rope or belt allegedly used in the hanging was not initially sent to AIIMS Bhopal during the examination of the body.
Because the ligature material was missing, doctors were unable to match it to marks on the woman’s neck, raising new questions about the handling and possible tampering of evidence.
The head of the investigation team later admitted the mistake and said action would be taken against the investigating officer. The woman’s family has demanded that a fresh autopsy be conducted at AIIMS Delhi and the investigation be shifted out of Madhya Pradesh.
The family also pointed out multiple injury marks mentioned in the initial autopsy report, claiming that these marks indicated physical assault and not suicide.
5. Competing narratives about mental health and abuse
As the dowry allegations intensified, the accused family presented a counter-narrative, claiming that the woman suffered from psychological problems and drug abuse.
In court filings and public statements, the husband and mother-in-law alleged that she was undergoing psychological counseling, had withdrawal symptoms and had taken marijuana while pregnant.
Her mother-in-law told the media: “After she came here, all her drug supplies ran out… She admitted to consuming large amounts of marijuana when she wanted to reverse her pregnancy… A counseling session was held during that period… although I cannot make any very technical statement on this issue because she was on drugs for schizophrenia.”
The woman’s family strongly denied these accusations, describing her as cheerful and professionally successful before marriage. They claim that she lost nearly 15 kg due to constant emotional harassment after moving to Bhopal.
The Special Investigation Team is investigating the case strictly on the basis of the allegations of dowry harassment and abetment mentioned in the FIR, irrespective of the claims made in the bail petition filed by the husband, the police said.
