GURUGRAM: A police inspector involved in the rescue operation died and 12 others — including two women constables — were injured when a 360-degree pendulum swing ride collapsed at the ongoing 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Craft Festival in Faridabad on Saturday evening, officials said.

(PTI)The incident took place around 6.15 pm, involving at least 26 people, officials said. They identified the deceased as Jagadish Prasad (59).

Faridabad Police Commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta told HT that Prasad died trying to rescue the trapped people.

“All the injured are undergoing treatment at two hospitals and their condition is said to be stable,” he said.

An FIR has been registered against the vendor operating the swing and an inquiry committee has also been constituted.

A video of the incident, capturing the exact moment of the collapse, has also gone online. This was also the second accident of the day at the fair. A visitor was injured when the designer gate of entrance No. 2 collapsed before the collapse.

Event nodal officer Habinder Yadav said three suffered minor injuries, while three others suffered head injuries and were taken for medical examination. “Until thorough inspection, clearance from experts, no such swings or rides will be allowed at the venue. Other activities will be allowed as per normal routine,” he said.

Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma also visited the spot. “An inquiry has been ordered to fix the responsibility of those whose negligence led to the collapse of the swing,” Sharma said.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini posted on X after the incident to mourn the officer’s death. “Necessary instructions have been issued to the officials concerned to ensure that all necessary medical care is provided to the injured. The state government is extending all possible assistance to them,” he wrote.
