Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims of the fire that killed nine people at Vivek Vihar in Delhi on Sunday morning. He also announced an exemption as a gift from $2 lakh to the relatives of the deceased and $50,000 for the injured.
“The loss of lives due to a fire accident in Delhi’s Shahdara area is very sad. My condolences to those who lost their loved ones. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. A reward of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of all those who lost their lives. The injured will be given Rs 50,000,” he wrote on X.
Nine people died after a deadly fire broke out in a four-storey residential building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar on Sunday. The fire was reported in the early hours, with police saying a PCR call was received at 3:48 am at Vivek Vihar police station. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said they were alerted one minute earlier, at 3:47 am, and rushed several teams to the scene. A total of 14 fire engines were deployed by 5am.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdhara) Rajendra Prasad Meena pointed out that the apartments located at the front and back of the building made access difficult for firefighters.
The youngest victim of the fire was a 1.5-year-old toddler, who was found with four others in the back of the second floor.
Search operations did not begin until after eight in the morning, after the fire had been completely extinguished.
