IMD issues red alert for Mumbai and Pune

After heavy overnight rain lashed Mumbai and neighboring cities, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for continued heavy rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall.

Moreover, in view of the IMD forecast, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to people to remain alert and not go out unless absolutely necessary.

As per IMD’s nowcast, red alert is in effect till 1 pm in Pune, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad, Thane and Palghar.

Meanwhile, an orange alert is active for Ratnagiri and Satara.

Amid heavy rains, public transport services, including metro and buses operated by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), were operating normally this morning, officials said.

However, commuters complained that suburban rail services were running with some delay.

Mumbai records heavy rainfall

The BMC recorded more than 200 mm of rain at several locations across Mumbai in the 24 hours ending 8 am on Sunday, with some places receiving more than 300 mm of rain.

The highest rainfall of 310.6 mm was recorded at the Building Proposals Office in Vikhroli West, followed by Colaba Pumping Station (306.6 mm) and Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli (301.8 mm).

According to BMC data, the areas that received more than 200 mm include Malabar Hill, Mandavi Fire Station, Colaba, Memunwada Fire Station, Vikhroli Fire Station, Baspoli Municipal School in Powai, Bhandup Complex, Andheri Fire Station, Chakala Municipal School, Jogeshwari and Aarey Colony in Goregaon.
