A 42-year-old patient was admitted to the emergency department of Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital after a ceiling fan fell on him while he was undergoing treatment on Saturday evening. The patient, identified as MD Akbar, died within hours of the accident.
The deceased, MD Akbar, was brought to GTB Hospital’s emergency department on July 18 by his brother with complaints of high blood pressure, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia, according to hospital staff familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 pm on Saturday when the nursing officer was providing treatment to Akbar at Emergency Ward 27. During the procedure, a ceiling fan allegedly came loose and fell on the patient.
A hospital staff member familiar with the developments said: “The fan fell directly on the patient’s bed while treatment was being provided. The nursing officer who was treating him was also injured in the accident.”
Hospital staff said that the patient and the nursing officer were injured.
According to the patient’s death certificate, which H.T. reviewed, Akbar died at approximately 12:16 a.m., less than three hours after the accident.

The cause of death was recorded as hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia on the death certificate.

Hospital staff, who are aware of the matter, also informed the hospital that family members of the deceased gathered at the hospital on Sunday morning, questioning the quality of treatment and raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
